In our grandmother’s time, a baby was born at home supported by elders. Cutting the
umbilical cord was seen as one of the most critical ritual of separating the baby and the
spiritual abode of the ancestors. Burying the stump of the cord was meant to ensure that the
baby is grounded on ancestral land. Being able to respond positively to the question: Kalana
ya gago e wetse kae, was perceived to be an integral part of mental health.
In this webinar, we revisit the role and significance of childbirth rituals. The webinar opens
with an overview of rituals in different regions from West, East, North, Central and Southern
Africa. This is followed by a breakdown of different rituals covering pre-conception,
pregnancy, birth and post birth period.
The main question to ponder over is how the colonial exportation of biomedical model of
childbirth has been instrumental in the suppression of these rituals and ceremonies.
