In many African cultures, postpartum period is a time of high care. Mothers are kept in
isolation for an extended period. They leave their birthing space after the burial of the stump
of the umbilical cord and performance of other postpartum rituals.
According to the South African law, a child must be registered within 30 days of their birth.
Any registration that happens after 30 days is declared as late registration. The Constitution
of South Africa prohibits the State from discriminating anyone based on their cultural beliefs.
In this webinar we reflect on the following questions:
- What are the current requirements for birth registration?
- Do the requirements violate mothers’ right to practice postpartum rituals and
ceremonies?
